Tech, Digital Rights and Freedom of Expression
It is commonplace for rights defenders, journalists, trade union members, net-citizens and critics to experience online surveillance and judicial harassment due to expressing their critical opinion on social media platforms such as Facebook and TikTok. Social media platforms such as Meta and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology companies are also complicit in allowing criminal syndicate webs to operate through their platforms, particularly in the context of online scam operations.
We document human rights abuses and conduct comprehensive research into human rights implications of harmful policies and actions by AI, digital technology corporations and their
alleged roles in failing to take adequate protection measures to prevent the abuses on their platforms. This evidence base is used to engage authoritatively with tech companies and government bodies, advocating for stronger safeguards against these harms. We champion the development of national guidelines or regulations that ensure AI and digital technologies are used in a manner consistent with human rights principles. BHRE Center will leverage international frameworks which currently provide a framework for AI regulation such as the UN Global Principles for Information Integrity, which emphasizes core principles environmental sustainability, transparency, and accountability in AI.
